Redmi 4A - A stands for Affordability!

The Redmi 4A has been on the market for quite some time now and retails at an attractive price of Rs. 5999 for the 16GB variant. Xiaomi has been quite successful in the below 15K smartphone category because of their marvellous phones at affordable prices. Let's find out if the Redmi 4A meets those levels or not.

Display:

The Redmi 4A comes with a 12.7 centimetres (5-inch) IPS capacitive touchscreen with 1280 x 720 pixels resolution and 296 ppi pixel density. The display is pretty crisp and vibrant and offers great colour contrast and wide viewing angles. This phone has the best display in the below 10k price range hands down. Full points to Xiaomi for the display.

Hardware:

The Redmi 4A comes in 3 colours: Gold, Rose Gold and Dark Grey and comes with a plastic body shell which feels a bit cheap in the hand but looking at the price point we can't complain.

The phone comes with Dual SIM functionality with a hybrid secondary sim card slot that can also be used to put in memory cards of up to 128GB. I reviewed the 16GB version of the phone which has about 10.5GB usable memory out of the box, so the memory card slot was a saviour!

On the front, along with the display we get the capacitive touch buttons on the Redmi 4A which are not backlit. I faced some problems in using these buttons in the dark initially but eventually, my fingers got used to the positioning of these buttons.

Redmi 4A comes with an Infrared sensor on the top which is a rare sight on smartphones these days so kudos to Xiaomi for putting it in. Initialising my TV and AC with the Infrared Sensor was quick and easy thanks to the in-built Remote app.

The phone has no fingerprint scanner which is a disappointment considering the fact that it is a basic norm in smartphones these days.

Camera:

The Redmi 4A has a 13MP primary camera with 5-elements lens, f/2.2 aperture, PDAF, high dynamic range (HDR), panorama, 1080p full HD video recording and has a 5MP front facing camera.

The picture quality in daylight is good with great contrasts and dynamic range but when we move on to artificial lighting or dark lighting conditions things go downhill. The images have a lot of noise and the colours are very inaccurate. The front facing 5MP camera has somewhat the same story.

Performance and Battery Life:

The Redmi 4A comes with a 1.4GHz Cortex A53 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 Quad Core Processor coupled with 2GB RAM.

The phone is snappy and shows no lag in normal usage. Over the 15 days, I reviewed this phone it almost never lagged in normal use which did include casual gaming. Due to the heavy MIUI8 skin over Android Marshmallow, we get only about 1GB of free RAM when the phone is completely idle. I'm not much of a fan of MIUI but the level customisation that the UI offers is amazing.

It has a 3120mAH lithium-ion battery and comes with a basic 1A charger. The battery lasted me through a day easily in normal use.

Verdict:

At Rs. 5999 the Redmi 4A offers great value for money and snappy performance! It misses out on some key features such as the fingerprint scanner and comes with a below par camera but considering the price point, we can't really complain.

Who should buy the phone:
1. People who want an affordable smartphone and don't mind losing out on some basic amenities such as the fingerprint scanner.
2. People who mainly use their phone for texting and calling or casual internet browsing.
3. People who want great battery life.

Who should not buy the phone:
1. People who do a lot of heavy gaming on their phones.
2. People looking out for a smartphone with a great camera.
